Portlandia

April took us west.  I attended another Design Outside the Lines retreat in Ashland, OR with Diane Ericson and Carol Lee Shanks.  I was there for 6 days (April 8 - 14) and John joined me for a trip up the Oregon coast to Portland.  Both parts of the trip were great.

I really like going to 'sewing camp' with Diane, in fact, I have already signed up to go to Taos next year!  The sewing is always fun, but the best part is getting to hang out with my 'tribe.'  I love spending time with people who get the fabric-sewing-design thing.  This year my 'epiphany' was that I really want to make things that I want to wear.  It sounds weird, but I have been making 'show pieces' not 'wearing pieces.' I think it will change my sewing going forward.

Our theme this time was "Three Easy Pieces."  The idea being pieces that would layer and work together in different combinations.  I made a linen shift dress cut on the bias as one of my layers.  The fabric on the wall in the picture was eco-dyed by one of my fellow DOL's.  She uses different leaves wrapped in the fabric to transfer the shapes and the colors.

Lithia Park in Ashland is one of my favorite places.  It follows a beautiful stream that, in the spring is full and rushes through the gorgeous Dogwood and Magnolias, past "Middle Earth-like" vistas covered in gobs of lush moss.

Both times I have visited (Spring 2016 and 2017) I was greeted in the park by a beautiful Stellar Jay bird.  He is obviously aware of his 'stellarness' because he absolutely poses for me to take his picture.

This rainbow from the window of my Ashland Springs Hotel room really sums up my week at camp!

John joined me on Friday and we headed north to Portland!  We stopped at the University of Oregon to see one of John's meccas, Hayward Field.  For anyone in track and field, this is the center of the universe.  We had a super special tour with Lance Deal, the head of facilities and Olympic silver medal hammer thrower!

Our next stop took us out to the coast at Pacific City.  We visited with an old World Cup colleague of John's, Kathy Griffin and her partner, Peter Byrne.  Our hotel window looked out on Haystack Rock.  The little black dots in the front of the rock are crazy surfers who braved the 50 degree weather on Easter Sunday morning.  (they did have wetsuits...but still!)

We wandered a bit farther north through the Willamette Valley.  Oregon wine makers really know what they are doing with Pinot Noir grapes!  Because our one day in wine country happened to be Easter Sunday, many of the vineyards were closed.  Not much of an issue though since we can only manage 3 or 4 in a day anyway!

We stopped at one place on Saturday on our way to Pacific City.  It was called Tyee and it was just so-so.  The hazelnuts were the best part.  The trees are gorgeous!

Sunday we stopped in McMinnville but there wasn't much happening.  The one in-town winery that we found open was not particularly good.  We should have known better when we saw the name...Naked Winery!  The afternoon improved considerably.  We went UP to Domaine Serene which was really lovely.  The view was spectacular and the wine was pretty good, too.  They have some vineyards in France that they are producing from and we really liked those wines.  I was completely surprised by how much I enjoyed the Chardonnay.  When I said that I didn't usually care for Chardonnay, the server said, "You don't care for buttery, oaked Chardonnay."  I guess he was right, cuz I sure liked their version.  Our last stop was at Raptor Ridge, again at the top of the world.  From their front porch we could see Mt. Hood, Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Rainier and Mt, Adams.  Very cool.  I had tried their Pinot at the hotel in Ashland and really liked it, so I was excited to visit the winery.  It was a great ending to our day in wine country.

On to Portlandia! ...and a couple of drizzly days!

We stayed at the Kimpton Vintage...as in wine vintage...each room was named after an Oregon winery and had bottles of their wines in the rooms.  Kind of a fun theme.

We visited both the Chinese garden, which was right in town, and the Portland Japanese garden out in Washington Park.  They had just finished a huge $30 million renovation to the entrance that was incredible.  If we had been there the week before it would have been closed!

We really liked the cool green and metal roofs of the new pavilions at the Japanese garden.  The new courtyard was very well done and a nice update to the space.

Sewing, wine, friends and gorgeous scenery....all the ingredients of a fabulous trip!

The Weather is here, wish you were beautiful!

Last year as I struggled through the gray and dreary months of winter in Michigan as a 'newly minted retiree' it occurred to me that, "I don't have to be here!"  I'm not sure why that thought didn't happen before March, but when it popped into my head I decided to find a warm and sunny place to spend NEXT January!  After several interweb trolling sessions I settled on Key West.  I had visited a few times and found the crazy mix of people and culture intriguing and thought I would give it a go.

It turned out that even in March, rentable property on Key West is scarce.  I ended up with a 3 bedroom house in the middle of "Old Town."  It seemed like too much space for me, but it turns out that if you invite people to visit you in Key West, they say "Yes!"  I had plenty of visitors for my extra beds.

The house was perfect!  Bright, cheerful, lots of outside space to enjoy the sunny weather and right in the middle of everything!

John decided that it would be too hard to be in Michigan while I was tooling around on an island, so he arranged to be there for the first two weeks.  We arrived on January 1, 2017 ready for our adventure to start.  (It must be a great place to relax...)

We started from the beginning....
Our visitors....

Max and Georgia visited for the weekend and overlapped with Mark and Jill Reid....

Bev and Rob Crabb took the ferry down from Ft. Myers.  Boats are not Bev's favorite things, but she did fine!

Carol Snapp and Kelly Clarke drove all the way from Ft. Myers through alligator country to visit!

And Patti also took the ferry from Ft. Myers..she must really love me!

Fun stuff...

Eating in Key West is really easy to do!  John was in heaven with all the seafood options and put on a big orange hat to sample one of the many versions of Key Lime pie!  (Blue Heaven)
The Sunset Celebration happens everyday at Mallory Square.
Lots of artists shops and street performers.  Dominic and his 'Flying Cats' have been entertaining people (and scaring children) for 18 years!

Biggo iguana that lives at the Higgs Beach Garden.

Amazing Banyan tree at the Higgs Beach Garden.

We thought the Butterfly Conservancy might be a 'touristy' thing...it was, but also completely cool!

One of the 53 polydactyl cats that live on the grounds of the Hemmingway House.

Ft. Jefferson at the Dry Tortugas National Park.  (Bev braved another boat ride, she must really love Rob!)

Night kayaking through the Mangroves with Kelly and Carol was amazing and bit creepy!  Glad we had a guide.
Yeah!  Beach!

Duval Street...'nuff said!

Random stuff...

The first day we were there St. Paul's Church was being tented for termites.  It looked like a huge circus tent!  Two days later all back to normal!  Huge full moon with the elegant building.

Hands down the best way to get around is on a beach cruiser!  I loved my turquoise bike...I named her Penelope.  By the end of the month we had rented 10 bikes!  ...and one electric car! (Patti wasn't sure biking was for her!)

Along with the 6 toed cats, there are chickens EVERYWHERE!  ...and... you don't mess with the chickens on Key West!

Yes there is a fabric store on the Island!!!

When we arrived on January 1 this sign read "Westin"  by the end of the month it had been turned into a Margaritaville Resort.  ...and no we didn't see Jimmy Buffet!

We weren't sure whose bright idea it was to put the cruise ship dock right in front of the Mallory Square sunset celebration site, but every evening a biggo cruise ship backed into the sunset!  Brilliant!
Sunset money shot!

I took a class in iphotography at the local art studios...a couple of my practice shots!

It seemed to take forever for January to get here and then it just disappeared!  This was the sign in the window of the airport shop as I headed to my gate.  A very tempting idea!!!
